Top listing goes back to the future
A 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 has raced past thousands of other vehicles for sale to be the most-popular listing on Trade Me Motors last year after attracting nearly 100,000 views.
The model, made famous by the Back to the Future films, was only listed in December 2024 but quickly caught the attention of car fans and movie buffs to top the annual chart.
Jayme Fuller, Trade Me Motors sales director, says the listing is “a chance to own a piece of automotive – and cinematic – history”.
The seller labels the DeLorean as “cooler than cool” and by the end of last year it had amassed 97,676 views.
Also making the top 10 listings of 2024 were supercars, a prime ministerial limousine, and a classic Chevy.
Second spot went to a 2022 McLaren Elva, which Fuller describes as a “breathtaking supercar offering an unparalleled driving experience for motors enthusiasts”.
Paying homage to the Can-Am racing era of the 1960s, and specifically the legendary McLaren M8B, there were only 149 units produced worldwide.
The one on Trade Me had a $2.8 milion price tag and Fuller notes the listing “generated a flurry of activity, clocking up an impressive 67,501 views. It really offered a glimpse into the golden age of motorsport.”
Close behind on 65,376 views was a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GT Black Series 4.0PT.
“Sought after for its turbocharged and aerodynamic features and with the second highest price of $1,249,990 on our list, this million-dollar sports car definitely piqued the interests of Kiwi car enthusiasts,” explains Fuller.
Former prime minister Helen Clark's ministerial limousine, a 2005 Ford Ltd Ba V8, was listed on behalf of the New Zealand government. It attracted 46,525 views and a final bid of $35,200.
Completing the top five was a White Pointer 840 Prop Sportsman Diesel 350HP, with the trailerboat listed by the New Zealand Courts viewed nearly 41,000 times.
The lowest-priced listing in last year’s top 10 was a 2019 Mazda 6 Tamaki 2.5PT/6AT priced at $25,000.
A 2023 Mercedes-Benz S 63 Maybach S680 Sedan, a 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser Chevy FJ45, a 1968 Holden Monaro and a 1971 Holden Torana GTR completed the list.
