Three stars for i30 Sedan

ANCAP has released a three-star safety rating for the Hyundai i30 Sedan.

It applies to i30 Sedan hybrid and facelifted petrol vehicles sold into the Australian market from October 2023, excluding the i30 Sedan N.

The car’s safety-rating performance has been limited by scores in adult-occupant protection, vulnerable road-user protection and safety assist, says ANCAP.

Petrol sedan variants built prior to June 2023 are not covered by the three-star rating and are unrated.

The i30 Sedan’s best performance was seen in the assessment area of child-occupant protection with an overall score of 81 per cent. A score of 71 per cent was achieved for adult-occupant protection.

The assessment areas of vulnerable road-user protection and safety assist were identified as lower performers.

The performance of safety assist limited the i30 Sedan to three stars due to the absence of an advanced autonomous emergency braking (AEB) capabilities, including AEB head-on and AEB crossing (t-bone) and the inclusion of blind-spot monitoring as standard.

Hybrid variants of Hyundai’s i30 Sedan were added to the model’s line-up in February 2024. A mid-cycle facelift to petrol variants was introduced from October 2023 and petrol vehicles built after the mid-cycle facelift are also covered by this rating.

Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP’s chief executive officer, says: “The Hyundai i30 is a popular choice within the small-car segment and the addition of the hybrid powertrain this year broadens consumer interest.

“This underscores the importance of having an independent safety rating available for this model – so consumers and fleets can make informed decisions around safety and determine which model is right for them.”

“The Australian government’s recent new-vehicle emissions standards are helping to provide vehicle manufacturers with the confidence to introduce more alternative-powered models into the Australian market.

“We had hoped Hyundai would have used this mid-cycle facelift opportunity to elevate the safety performance of the i30 Sedan.

“Hyundai has shown it can deliver five-star safety and we believe the i30 Sedan could achieve this with the right safety enhancements.

“Smaller vehicles are inherently more vulnerable due to their size, so it’s particularly important for manufacturers to prioritise safety to protect occupants and other road users.”
