Teen’s talent shines for award
Auto electrician apprentice Carter Boyle, from Gisborne, has been named the New Zealand winner in the 2026 Capricorn Rising Stars Awards.
The 18-year-old is completing an automotive engineering level 3 qualification through the Eastern Institute of Technology while undertaking his apprenticeship with Eastland Auto Electrical.
Award judges say Boyle, pictured, has developed a reputation as a highly capable and motivated young technician and was selected from 78 nominees for the prize.
Boyle says the pace of change across the automotive industry was one of the things that appealed to him about his career.
“What excites me most is how quickly the industry is evolving, especially with electric vehicles, hybrid systems and the growing level of electronics in modern vehicles,” he adds.
“I enjoy learning new things and challenging myself. As the industry changes, I want to continue developing my skills so I can contribute to the technologies that will become more common in the future.”
He has earned the respect of his colleagues through his professionalism and passion for emerging technologies, including electric vehicles and battery applications.
The Capricorn Rising Stars Awards are in their ninth year and recognise outstanding automotive apprentices across Australia and New Zealand.
Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group chief executive officer, says Boyle is a deserving recipient of the New Zealand title.
“For someone so early in his career, Carter has already earned a remarkable level of trust from the people around him,” he explains.
“He’s not only building strong technical skills, but he’s showing a genuine interest in where the industry is heading. That’s exactly the kind of mindset that will help shape the future of the automotive industry.
“This year is also a significant year for the Capricorn Rising Stars Awards. For the first time, we’re recognising overall winners in both Australia and New Zealand, in addition to our regional winners.
“It means we’re recognising more apprentices than ever before, while also acknowledging the important role member workshops play in helping them build successful careers.”
Scott Wootton, Eastland Auto Electrical director, adds Boyle has consistently exceeded expectations since joining the business.
“Carter is developing into far more than a skilled technician. He is becoming someone who will contribute positively to the future of the automotive industry.
“His initiative, reliability and technical capability have earned him a level of trust that is uncommon for someone at this stage of their career. He takes ownership of his learning, embraces challenges and approaches every task with professionalism and determination.”
Wootton notes that among Boyle’s key achievements is successfully diagnosing a complex remote-locking fault on a Toyota Aqua that had previously challenged other technicians.
“Through a methodical approach and persistence, he identified a fault linked to the ignition key reminder circuit and successfully resolved the issue,” he explains.
