Craig Clarke has been appointed chief executive officer of Tasman Toyota after spending more than 18 years with the Taranaki-based business.

He replaces James Crighton in the top job as the franchise looks at its future growth within the Taranaki community, with dealerships currently operating in New Plymouth, Hawera and Westown.

Clarke, pictured, was born and bred in Taranaki and has more than 35 years of experience in the automotive sector.

His early career saw him working as director or sales manager of a number of car companies and rental businesses before he joined Tasman Toyota in May 2005 as sales manager, a position he held for 17 years.

In 2022, he became general manager and at the start of August this year he was promoted to the CEO position.

Throughout his time with the franchise, he has invested in the company and now owns 50 per cent as a shareholder and also serves as a director.

Clarke says: “I have some big ambitions of where I want to take the business. Our focus needs to be on engaging with the community in meaningful ways and I intend to continue the great work James has done in this space.

“I’m excited for what lies ahead of me. There are big challenges ahead of me as the industry sees momentous change, and that’s exciting.”

Crighton, who has been CEO for more than 21 years, adds the timing was right for the leadership change and he will continue as a shareholder and director in the business.

Tasman Toyota was formed in 2002, evolving from Gray & Inch Toyota, the original company being established in 1946.

The store is New Zealand's longest-operating Toyota franchise and has been trading on its current site in New Plymouth since 1963.
