Stars arrive for electric races

Posted on 24 November, 2014

Two world-record holders have arrived in New Zealand ahead of EVolocity – the country’s first-ever day of electric motorsport. Eva Håkansson, the fastest woman in the world on two wheels, and Bill Dube – builder of the world’s quickest electric motorbike – have kicked off the event’s lead-up with a presentation at Manukau Institute of Technology, Auckland. New Zealand’s first Tesla S was also on show and – along with the international guests and their vehicles – it will make its way down to Christchurch for EVolocity. The Tesla S will test its full power at the event when it races against a combustion Ferrari at Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Ruapuna on November 30. Evolocity is a motorsport event with an environmental twist – demonstrating electric-vehicle (EV) performance and efficiency. It aims to promote EV use while encouraging Kiwis to innovate, invent and get involved in the future of transport. Event highlights include a 20km efficiency rally, high-school competitions, dual-lap sprints with electric go-karts, motorbikes and cars, vehicle parade and electric-bike acrobatics featuring freestyle motocross star Luke Smith, of Nitro Circus fame. There will also be standing quarter-mile drag competitions with Killacycle, the Tesla versus Ferrari, an electric Ford Falcon up against an XR8 ute, and combustion versus electric motorbikes. Tickets for EVolocity are on sale now and can be bought online at www.evolocity.co.nz.
