Sporty edge for SUV

Toyota NZ is rolling out the RAV4 GR Sport plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which it says is the sportiest, most dynamic and technically advanced RAV4 ever offered here.

Inspired by Gazoo Racing, it delivers performance focused design, motorsport derived chassis engineering and electrified power.

Available with all-wheel drive (AWD), it pairs usability with GR Sport “driving character”. It’s aimed at drivers who want a “sportier design, engaging on-road experience with sharper handling and versatility”.

Tatsuya Ishikawa, chief executive of Toyota NZ, adds: “This GR Sport has had a vast number of engineering hours dedicated to its design, which means it’s a powerful but meets the practical needs of an SUV.”

Toyota’s sixth generation PHEV powertrain, combining a 2.5 litre petrol engine with front and rear electric motors to deliver 227kW of total system output, means it is the most powerful RAV4 the marque has ever built for down under.

A 22.7kWh lithium ion battery enables extended electric driving capability for daily commutes, while hybrid performance delivers no range anxiety, confident acceleration and overtaking on demand. AWD is standard for “assured” traction and performance in all conditions.

GR Sport enhancements include a wider track width – at plus 20mm – for greater cornering stability, mapping of electronic power steering, sport-driving mode for a more solid feel and feedback, and the tuned front and rear dampers and coil springs have a 15mm lower ride height.

A front performance damper contributes to sharper handling, and enhanced ride comfort and quietness, while strengthened special rear-suspension member braces increase rigidity and stability for better control.

“This is the most performance focused RAV4 we’ve ever introduced to New Zealand,” says Ishikawa. “It showcases how electrification and driving excitement can go hand in hand, offering customers sportiness with the versatility they expect from an SUV.”

The RAV4 GR Sport PHEV AWD costs from $66,990, which is Toyota’s driveaway price including GST.
