Rolls-Royce used by Queen for sale
A Rolls-Royce that took Queen Elizabeth II on tours of New Zealand and a Mercedes-Benz formerly owned by internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom are going up for auction in Auckland this weekend.
The two vehicles are part of Webb’s Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia sale being held at 33a Normanby Road, Mt Eden, from 2.30pm on Sunday, August 11.
The 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, pictured above, was used during two royal tours of New Zealand in 1963 and 1970 and is expected to fetch between $175,000 and $200,000.
Features of the vehicles include custom specifications as per Queen Elizabeth II’s preference, such as wool seats, triple-carpeted floor, and a built-in drinks cabinet with silver goblets and decanters.
The car also has a lowered floor that was designed to accommodate the Duke of Edinburgh’s height.
Webb’s says the vendor’s family has owned the Phantom V for four decades. It was used as a wedding car in the 1980s before being put into storage in the 1990s, where it remained for 30 years.
In the past three years it has been used as a wedding car again and has 83,167 miles (134,000km) on its odometer.
Also going under the hammer on Sunday is a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet that only has 8,674km on the clock and is expected to sell between $650,000 and $850,000.
One of only 80 models produced, the car is finished in iridium silver metallic with a black leather interior and detailed with carbon-fibre panels. It can reach a top speed of 322kph and performs the 0-100kph sprint in 3.9 seconds
The left-hand drive car, pictured below and described as in “excellent condition”, was formerly owned by the controversial tech mogul Dotcom as part of his private collection of high-performance vehicles.
Webb’s adds it was also driven by Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen during a highly publicised track lap at Germany’s Nürburgring in 2012.
