Ranger takes out top model
It has done it again – the Ford Ranger has been crowned the country’s best-selling new vehicle of the year.
The blue oval’s ute notched up 11,741 registrations in 2024. That was 1,211 units ahead of Toyota’s RAV4, which came second overall with 10,530.
The Hilux finished second on the commercials ladder, and came third overall, with 7,295 sales. Mitsubishi’s Triton was next up with 4,230.
Total registrations in the new-commercials sector reached 41,384 in 2024. That compared to 38,545 in 2023 for a year-on-year increase of 7.4 per cent, according to NZTA statistics.
Last year, the Ranger, pictured, secured 28.4 per cent of the market for new commercial vehicles. The Hilux’s share was 17.6 per cent and the Triton secured 10.2 per cent.
In 2023, there were 9,908 Rangers, 8,049 Hiluxes and 3,103 Tritons registered for market shares of 25.7, 20.9 and 8.1 per cent respectively.
The Nissan Navara was 2024’s fourth best-selling new commercial on 1,892 and 4.6 per cent. Toyota’s Hiace came fifth overall and was the most popular van thanks to 1,714 registrations for a 4.1 per cent market share.
Sixth spot in 2024 went to the Ford Transit with 1,470 units, followed by Isuzu’s D-Max on 1,295. The top 10 was rounded out by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter on 941, Volkswagen’s Amarok with 762 and the Fiat Ducato on 742. New market entrant, the BYD Shark, had 61 sales.
Toyota 9% behind blue oval
Ford was New Zealand’s best-selling commercials marque of 2024 with 13,211 units for a market share of 31.9 per cent. This compared to 10,732 in 2023 for 27.8 per cent.
Toyota again placed second with 9,495 and 22.9 per cent. In 2023, its figures were 10,440 and 27.1 per cent.
Mitsubishi’s statistics for last year came in at 4,232 and 10.2 per cent to claim third. It had 3,115 sales in 2023 for a market share of 8.1 per cent.
Isuzu came fourth in 2024 with 2,376 registrations and 5.7 per cent of market. The top five was completed by Nissan with 1,892 and 4.6 per cent.
Monthly sales climb 160%
Registrations of new commercial vehicles climbed by a whopping 159.6 per cent to 3,105 in December compared to 1,196 during the same month of 2023.
The Ranger led the way with 1,476 units for a market share of 47.5 per cent. Hilux finished the month in second spot with 426 while Mitsubishi’s Triton came third on 179.
Ford was December’s best-selling marque with 1,581 units and a 50.9 per cent market share. Toyota was second with 510 and Mitsubishi was third on 179.
