Positive response to Tyrewise

September 1 marks a significant step in the automotive industry’s recycling and environmental journey, says the Motor Trade Association (MTA).

That’s when, under the Tyrewise scheme, end-of-life tyres (ELTs) will be collected free from retailers and collection sites with no disposal fees.

Lee Marshall, the MTA’s chief executive, is pleased to have been involved in the decade-long project and is part of the Tyrewise working group.

He says: “Tyres dumped or buried in landfills have been a blight on the country. As Tyrewise says, roughly four million a year are disposed of in harmful ways. The impacts on the environment are obvious and horrendous.”

From the start of next month, ELTs will be collected and repurposed with no charge to automotive businesses, which “want to do the right thing for the environment and the community”.

Marshall adds: “This removes the last barrier to participation and ensures the automotive industry is playing its part in the circular economy.”

The MTA has promoted the scheme and kept members informed during the process. The response has been positive. “It shows what’s possible when industry and government work together to find a solution.”
