NZ closes in on 9,000 EVs

New Zealand is closing in on 9,000 electric vehicles (EVs) registered, making the country well on track to meet the government’s goal of 16,000 EVs registered by 2019. 

New Zealand’s EV fleet registrations came to 8,696 at the end of June, a 119 per cent increase on June 2017, according to the latest statistics by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). 

Out of all EVs registered in June, used light pure electric vehicles made up a 54 per cent of the total, with 4,764 registered. 

New light pure EVs reached 1,633 registrations and registrations of new and used light plug-in hybrid vehicles came to 1,540 and 676, respectively. 

Sales of used Nissan Leafs from Japan and the UK continue to dominate New Zealand’s EV market. 

Furthermore, out of all EVs listed on Trade Me, 91 per cent are Nissan Leafs, according to Trade Me’s latest statistics.
