MotorSport New Zealand has announced Deborah Day has been elected as its new president after securing the position during the organisation’s 77th annual general meeting at the weekend.

Day, pictured, has received a number of accolades for her contributions to motorsport over the years, including the group’s Volunteer of the Year Award and the Award of Merit.

She has also previously served on the board of MotorSport NZ, which in a statement says her extensive background in business and motorsport makes her an ideal leader for the organisation.

“Her leadership is expected to further enhance the growth and development of motorsport in New Zealand,” it adds.

The presidential role became vacant following the completion of Wayne Christie’s term limit at the AGM on Saturday, May 25.

Day says she is honoured to secure the position and aims to build on the strong foundation laid by her predecessors, fostering a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and continuous improvement.

“I am excited to work alongside the board and everyone involved with MotorSport NZ to continue driving innovation, developing new opportunities and enhancing the overall experience for fans, competitors, and volunteers alike,” she continues.

“Let’s unlock our full potential, and make sure the world can see, experience and love motorsport.”

Scott O’Donnell was also re-elected unopposed to the board for his final three-year term at the AGM.

Christie had been president since 2016 and before that spent five years as vice-president and was part of the executive team from 2008-11.

During his tenure, he guided the organisation through some challenging times for motorsport, including the Covid-19 pandemic.

“He also presided over a period of significant growth and development,” says MotorSport NZ.

“Notable highlights under his leadership include the triumphant return of the World Rally Championship to New Zealand soils, the introduction of the Formula Regional Oceania Championship, and the ongoing success of the Elite MotorSport Academy.

“His efforts have greatly contributed to enhancing our sport's profile both domestically and globally.”
