New-look SUV rolling into NZ

Mazda Motors of New Zealand has announced the new 2024 Mazda CX-30, which offers more efficient engine options and increased levels of standard equipment, will be arriving in dealerships from this month.
After changes to the CX-30 for this year, the SUV now comprises two front-wheel drive and two all-wheel-drive powertrains coupled to advanced and fuel-efficient petrol engines.
The GSX opens the model’s range and features a new two-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine that maintains its outputs of 114kW and 200Nm.
Fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the vehicle are down to 7l/100km and 163g/km, respectively – the latter a reduction of nearly four per cent from the 2023 GSX.
Inside, all Mazda CX-30s are now equipped with USB-C connections and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Next in the line-up is the SP25, which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre petrol engine and front-wheel drive. Output figures come in at 139kW and 252Nm, with fuel economy of 7.3 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 171g/km.
It also has 18-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black, gloss black exterior mirrors, dark-tinted privacy glass on the rear windows, and black exterior accents.
Red accents emphasise the sports cloth seat trim and, as per other CX-30 grades, a colour, head-up display features along with an instrument panel incorporating a seven-inch, thin-film-transistor display.
Making the Limited variant stand out is a glass sunroof, adaptive LED headlights, silver metallic 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a Bose 12-speaker audio system and a 10.25-inch central infotainment display.
Top of the CX-30 range, the Takami features a Skyactiv-X M Hybrid engine that Mazda says burns petrol more efficiently thanks to spark-controlled compression ignition. It also produces more power yet fewer emissions than a comparable petrol engine.
Recommended retail pricing for the CX-30 starts from $43,390, excluding on-road costs.
Nameplate returns
Mazda notes the return of its SP nameplate, which has featured on models over the past two decades.
The SP preface stands for sports-inspired, sophistication and performance, and traditionally such models have offered higher capacity engines, stylish design cues and enhanced equipment levels.
First seen on the Mazda 323 Sporthatch SP20 in 2001, three generations of Mazda3 have worn the SP23 and SP25 insignia since.
More recently, the SP20 name has been applied to Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30, along with the Mazda CX-5 SP25T.
