Drive Electric has announced the appointment of Brian Dewil, the former founding managing director of Ola New Zealand, as its new chief executive officer.

Dewil, pictured, is described by his new employers as an accomplished executive who has consistently grown and scaled companies, particularly in the mobility and technology sectors.

He spent six years at rideshare company Ola NZ, leading the company from pre-launch in 2018 to capturing 40 per cent market share and achieving $65 million in annual recurring revenue within three years.

While a board director with the business, he provided strategic oversight on regulatory compliance and legal matters while spearheading enterprise partnerships across Australia and New Zealand.

Since August this year, Dewil has held Microsoft artificial intelligence (AI) certification and helps businesses to optimise databases and record-keeping systems for integration with AI technology.

His other experiences include domestic and international leadership roles at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and strategy and business growth consultancy roles at New Zealand businesses.

He also spent two years from 1988 as a safari guide in Africa and was director of tourism business, Call of Africa Safaris, which is based in South Africa, from 1989 to March this year.

Kirsten Corson, Drive Electric’s board chair, says there were a large number of skilled and highly qualified applicants for the role at the not-for-profit that aims to accelerate the uptake of e-mobility.

“After a thorough selection process, we are excited to welcome Brian, his understanding of the EV [electric vehicle] landscape, along with his proven leadership and commitment to sustainability, make him the perfect fit to guide Drive Electric into its next chapter,” she adds.

“To date we have focused on light vehicles and now we’re looking to expand into commercial and heavy vehicles too. We’re excited to have Brian on board and look forward to the electrifying journey ahead.”

Dewil says he is honoured to lead the organisation’s mission of accelerating sustainable transportation across New Zealand.

“My focus is on building meaningful partnerships between industry leaders, government bodies, and communities to strengthen Aotearoa New Zealand’s EV ecosystem,” he explains.

“Our priorities are clear: advocating for forward-thinking EV policies, expanding our charging network, growing membership into light commercial and heavy EVs, and making electric mobility accessible to everyone living in Aotearoa New Zealand.

“We’re committed to fostering innovation while delivering practical solutions that benefit both our environment and our communities.”

He adds he looks forward to working alongside Drive Electric’s stakeholders to create “lasting change and contribute to a sustainable future”.
