New car sales up 36%

Toyota RAV4 tops the model chart while Tesla and BYD leap up the sales ladder in June.

New car sales up 36%

There were 8,239 new passenger vehicles registered in June, which was up by 36 per cent from 6,056 units in the same month of last year.

Toyota’s RAV4, pictured, remained top of the model chart last month after selling 781 units and clinching 9.5 per cent of the market. Its sales numbers were also up by 40.7 per cent from 555 registrations in June 2024.

Next on the ladder was Mitsubishi’s ASX with 481 registrations and a 5.8 per cent market share, and the Kia Seltos on 444 and 5.4 per cent. Those models recorded year-on-year sales increases of 90.9 and 134.9 per cent respectively.

Tesla’s Model Y took fourth place with 407 sales and a 4.9 per cent share of the market. The GWM Haval H6 completed the top five on 241 and 2.9 per cent.

In year-to-date terms, there have been 44,585 sales so far in 2025, which is up by 11.3 per cent from 40,067 at the same stage a year ago.

The RAV4 is the leading model year-to-date after selling 4,583 units for a 10.3 per cent market share.

The ASX is second with 2,198 units, followed by the Seltos on 1,878, the Mitsubishi Outlander with 1,596 and the Ford Everest on 1,067.

Toyota led the marques’ ladder in June with 1,525 registrations – up 26.9 per cent from 1,202 in the same month a year ago – and 18.5 per cent of the market. 

Kia was second with 835 sales and 10.1 per cent and Mitsubishi came third on 808 and 9.8 per cent. Tesla and BYD were next on the ladder with 457 and 415 units respectively.

Toyota is the leading marque year-to-date with 9,078 units and a 20.4 per cent slice of the market.

Next is Mitsubishi with 4,516 registrations and 10.1 per cent, and Kia on 4,377 and 9.8 per cent.
