New car sales soar 20%

There were 8,088 new passenger vehicles registered in August, which was up by 19.9 per cent from 6,748 units in the same month of last year.
Toyota’s RAV4, pictured, was the leading model last month after selling 1,039 units and accounting for 12.8 per cent of the market. Its sales numbers were up by 92.1 per cent from 541 registrations in August 2024.
Next on the ladder was Ford’s Everest on 413, up from 79 a year ago, and a 5.1 per cent market share.
Mitsubishi took out the next two spots with its ASX on 397 units and 4.9 per cent and the Outlander recording 353 and 4.4 per cent.
Kia’s Seltos completed the top five with 315 sales and 3.9 per cent of the market.
Year-to-date, there have been 60,278 sales, which is up by 13.4 per cent from 53,139 at the same stage a year ago.
The RAV4 is the leading model year-to-date after selling 6,219 units for a 10.3 per cent market share.
The ASX is second with 2,844 units, followed by the Seltos on 2,470, the Outlander with 2,254 and the Everest on 1,713.
Toyota topped the marques’ ladder in August with 1,978 registrations – up 59 per cent from 1,244 in the same month a year ago – and 24.5 per cent of the market.
Mitsubishi was second with 869 sales and 10.7 per cent and Kia came third on 778 and 9.6 per cent. Ford and Mazda were next on the ladder with 532 and 513 units respectively.
Toyota is the most-popular marque year-to-date with 12,404 units and a 20.6 per cent slice of the market.
Next is Mitsubishi with 6,226 registrations and 10 per cent, and Kia on 5,046 and 9.7 per cent.
