Monthly figures up 46.4 per cent but year-to-date registrations remain well below those of 2023.

New-car sales rebound

There were 6,341 new passenger vehicles registered in July, which was up by 46.4 per cent from 4,332 units in the same month of last year.

In year-to-date terms, there have been 46,423 sales so far in 2024, which is down 28.8 per cent from 65,222 at the same stage a year ago.

Toyota’s RAV4, pictured, was the top model on 394 units, compared with 316 in the same month a year ago, and accounted for 6.2 per cent of the market.

It is also the leading model for the year-to-date after selling 4,593 units and grabbing a 9.9 per cent share of activity.

Kia’s Seltos was next on 342 registrations and a 5.4 per cent market share, followed by the Mitsubishi ASX with 311 and 4.9 per cent.

Suzuki’s Swift and the Mitsubishi Outlander completed the top five last month on 300 and 256 units respectively.

The ASX is second on the year-to-date chart on 1,991 units, followed by the Outlander with 1,942, the Seltos on 1,698 and the Swift with 1,689.

Toyota topped the marques’ ladder in July with 980 registrations – up 44.5 per cent from 678 in the same month a year ago – and 15.5 per cent of the market. 

Next up were Mitsubishi on 755 and 11.9 per cent and Kia with 733 and 11.6 per cent. Suzuki and Mazda were next on the ladder with 480 and 333 units respectively.

Toyota is the leading marque year to date with 9,547 units and a 20.6 per cent market share.

Mitsubishi is second with 5,165 registrations and 11.1 per cent, with Kia third on 4,804 and 10.3 per cent.
