MotorSport NZ CEO quits
Elton Goonan has resigned as MotorSport New Zealand’s chief executive officer, effective June 27.
After five-and-a-half years with the governing body of motorsport, he is ready to pursue new opportunities and spend more time with his family.
“After discussions with the board over the past few weeks, I have decided to step down from the role and take some time to reset and focus on my family,” says Goonan, pictured.
“It has been a privilege to work with the dedicated team at MotorSport NZ and our incredible volunteers across the country through the challenges of recent years.
“Together, we continue to see a wide array of events run most weekends of the year, from grassroots to internationally accredited rally and race events.
“I’m sure the organisation and the sport will continue to thrive and grow, and I look forward to supporting it in the future.”
Like other sporting organisations, MotorSport NZ went through numerous challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic and the organisation helped its member clubs return to active competition through its Back In Motion programme.
Other recent projects include the transition to an online training system, expanding the suite of member benefits on offer to licence holders and, more recently, overseeing the introduction of the MotorSport Online system.
“Elton has contributed in numerous ways during his tenure,” says Deborah Day, president of MotorSport NZ. “We appreciate his passion for the sport and wish him all the best with his future endeavours.
“We remain focused on promoting, growing and developing motorsport in New Zealand, and look forward to a new chapter of growth and innovation.”
Goonan’s appointment was made permanent in May 2021 after he was acting CEO for nearly 12 months, prior to which he was competitions manager.
