Monthly activity in the new market suffers year-on-year dip but used sector records surge in sales.

Mixed fortunes for commercials

There were 4,278 new commercials registered last month, which was down by 7.7 per cent when compared with 4,633 in September 2021. 

The Ford Ranger was the best-selling model with 1,043 sales, a 25.9 per cent decrease from 1,407 in the same month a year ago. It had a market share of 24.4 per cent for September this year.

Toyota’s Hilux was close behind last month with 989 registrations and 23.1 per cent of the market. Its sales jumped 52.6 per cent year-on-year.

Mitsubishi’s Triton, pictured, was third on the models’ ladder in September with 379 registrations, which was an increase of 93.4 per cent from 196 a year ago.

The Nissan Navara and Toyota Hiace completed the top five with 198 and 140 sales respectively.

The Hilux remains narrowly out in front for the year-to-date with 7,621 registrations and a 20.7 per cent share of the market.

Next is the Ranger on 7,449 and 20.3 per cent, and the Triton on 5,317 units and 14.5 per cent.

On the marques’ ladder, Toyota was in pole position for September with 1,159 registrations, up 23.7 per cent from 937 units a year ago, and a market share of 23.7 per cent.

Ford’s 1,063 registrations last month were down 29.2 per cent from September 2021, and Mitsubishi was third on 445.

September’s figures take the year-to-date total for new commercials to 36,767 units, down 5.4 per cent from 38,855 at the same stage of 2021.

Toyota also leads the way so far this year with 9,193 registrations and a market share of 25 per cent. Ford is second with 7,774 and 21.1 per cent and Mitsubishi is third on 5,759 and 15.7 per cent.

Used market increases

As for used-imported commercials, there were 557 registered in September compared with 469 in the same month last year for an increase of 18.8 per cent.

Toyota’s Hiace was the leading model on 149 registrations, up 33 per cent from 112 registrations a year ago, and a market share of 26.8 per cent.

The Nissan NV350 was next on 70, up 34.6 per cent from 52 units over the same period, and the Isuzu Elf was third with 41 registrations.

The Hiace is the leading model year to date with 1,558 sales and a 25.7 per cent market share, and the Nissan NV350 is second on 931 units and 15.4 per cent.

Toyota was the top marque last month with 210 registrations, a 29.6 per cent rise from 162 a year ago, followed by Nissan with 124 units and Isuzu on 54.

Year to date, Toyota has 2,165 registrations and a 35.7 per cent market share. Nissan is next on 1,549 and 25.6 per cent, with Hino third on 520 and 8.6 per cent.

The year-to-date total for all used commercials was 6,061 at the end of September, units, up 25.8 per cent from 4,819 in 2021.
