MG recalls cars over seat safety

MG Motor New Zealand has announced it is recalling more than 1,200 units of its MG3 compact hatch after discovering a safety defect that could increase the injury risk to drivers in a crash.

The action affects vehicles that were manufactured between March 6, 2024, and July 30, 2025.

It comes after it was noted during Euro NCAP testing this year that the MG3’s driver-side seat, which has six-way manual adjustment, slid forward by 111.5mm on the side closest to the centre console in a collision.

MG Motor says this movement may increase the risk of leg injuries in the event of a frontal impact.

As a result, it is recalling 1,207 vehicles in New Zealand and has notified the NZTA and the Motor Industry Association.

MG Motor adds it is not aware of any incidents to date relating to the defect.

It will be directly contacting affected MG3 owners, who are also encouraged to contact their local MG Motor service centre as soon as possible to arrange a visit where an additional component will be fitted to the driver’s seat rail of the vehicle.

“This fitment will be conducted at no charge,” the company says. “The component will ensure optimal performance and safety and is estimated to take from 30 minutes up to one hour.”

MG Motor NZ adds it is committed to driver and passenger safety and is focused on continuous improvement of its product in this area.

“MG Motor will work closely with its dealer network to ensure timely and efficient management and outcomes from this safety campaign.”
