McLaren recalls supercars over blaze fears

McLaren is recalling a number of models after discovering some of its supercars are at risk of catching alight.

The marque has raised the alert for versions of the Senna, GT, 570GT, pictured, and 720S built between 2017 and 2020.

It warns the noise, vibration and harshness foam padding on the underside of the fuel tank can, in some instances, trap corrosive moisture. In turn, this may lead to corrosion of the fuel tank over time.

“If not addressed, the corrosion may cause fuel vapour or fluid to leak from the fuel tank which could increase the risk of a thermal incident,” the carmaker says.

The recall issued on August 27 advises affected owners to contact a McLaren authorised retailer.

Bentley Continental, model years 2017-18

Recall issued: August 27. The hazard: The power assisted steering hose may become detached from the stub pipe on to which it attaches due to the part being manufactured to an incorrect dimension. What to do: Owners will be contacted and arrangements made for remedial action.

Kia Seltos, model years 2019-20

Recall issued: August 27. The hazard: Some vehicles may experience steering-column lock function error due to design oversight from the factory.

Kia Sorento, model years 2005-09

Recall issued: June 23. The hazard: Some vehicles may experience an electrical short caused by oil or water entering the ABS/ESC module over a long period of time. What to do: Contact a Kia dealer.

Jeep Cherokee, model years 2014-17

Recall issued: August 27. The hazard: The power transfer unit (PTU) may allow relative movement between the differential input splines and transmission output shaft. This may result in the teeth of the splines wearing off and cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, it will result in a loss of motive power while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the park function while stationary, which can cause a vehicle to crash without warning. What to do: Contact a Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge or Ram dealer.

Toyota Prius, Prius V, Auris, model years 2013-18

Recall issued: August 27. The hazard: Repeated driving under certain high-load driving patterns may cause higher thermal stress in some transistors in the hybrid IPM, resulting in damage to those transistors over time. In this situation, the hybrid system may shut down instead of entering a failsafe driving mode, which may result in the car losing motive power at higher speeds, increasing the risk of an accident. What to do: Registered owners will be contacted by letter or call the customer dialogue centre.

Mercedes-Benz GLE, model years 2019-20

Recall issued: June 23. The hazard: The rear-door lower window trim might detach.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, model years 2018-19

Recall issued: August 27. The hazard: Check attaching screws for bonnet catch. What to do: Contact a Mercedes-Benz service outlet.

Mitsubishi I-MiEV, model years 2010-12

Recall issued: June 23. The hazard: The vacuum pump seal can deteriorate allowing moisture to enter and cause corrosion, which reduces the performance of the pump. Low vacuum warning is displayed on the dash and a warning sounds. What to do: Contact a Mitsubishi dealer.

BJ218 lower ball joint, suitable for Mitsubishi models, including L200, L300 and Triton

Recall issued: September 12. The hazard: On some ball joints, the suspension may fail while the vehicle is in motion, which may lead to an accident. What to do: Check the ball joints and if batch 218-H18 K, 213-C19 K or 218-C19 K is identified then stop using and contact BNT to arrange a replacement part to be fitted. Affected products that have not been fitted to vehicles should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
