Five schools have won the chance to develop an environmental project for their students as part of an initiative run by the Mazda Foundation.

The winning schools in the TREEmendous Education Programme for 2021 are Karetu School in Northland, Riverina in Auckland, Wainui Beach School in Gisborne, Waitara East in Taranaki, and Whanganui Intermediate.

Each site will receive a visit from Mazda ambassadors Ruud Kleinpaste, also known as the Bugman, and shark scientist Dr Riley Elliott, with the pair talking to students about sustainability and the importance of looking after our environment.

Kleinpaste will also help each school develop their chosen environmental project and assist teachers to identify ways to incorporate the environment into the curriculum.

The schools will also each receive $1,000 towards their projects and 200 native trees from Trees That Count.

David Hodge, managing director of Mazda New Zealand and chairman of the Mazda Foundation, says the education programme has been running for 10 years.

“We look forward to seeing the results of the work the schools will be doing with Ruud and Riley.”

Applications are now open to primary and intermediate schools for a TREEmendous Education Programme for 2022. For more information, visit treemendous.org.nz.
