Marque’s top-seller gets bigger

The all-new Kia Sportage aims to be bigger and better than its predecessor after growing in virtually every dimension and adding a number of innovative features.

Kia’s number-one-selling vehicle globally has been developed on a new architecture and due to the larger exterior, there is extra passenger room for the second-row and increased luggage capacity.

The extra space is created by an elongated wheelbase of 2,755mm, a length of 4,660mm, width of 1,865mm and height of 1,660mm.

Its 1,050mm legroom for second-row passengers and 1,000mm headroom represent an 80mm and 7mm increase respectively from the outgoing Sportage.

The interior of the fifth-generation model boasts a curved 12.3-inch digital cluster, with a 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen available in the GT-Line variant, which is paired with a blind-spot-view monitor for added safety when changing lanes.

Other features of the GT-Line include a 3D surround-view monitor that optimises images from four cameras – front, side mirrors and rear – to provide a 360-degree view in various modes.

The exterior has the marque’s signature tiger nose grille and boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lamps.

Passive and active high-tech systems deliver improved safety, such as Kia’s own Advanced Driver Assistance System technology to help avoid potential hazards.

While the Intelligent Speed Limit Assist system is a driver-assistance technology that detects speed signs through the front view camera. Information is then displayed on the instrument cluster and the optimised speed can then be used to set the speed limiter or smart cruise control.

The digital display with a 4.2-inch multi-function LCD, available on S, SX and SX+ trims, is a new simplistic feature designed to replace analogue gauges.

Across the various S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line trims, a 2.0-litre MPI offering 115kW or 192Nm of power, a 1.6-litre TGDI producing 132kW or 265Nm, and a R2.0-litre diesel delivering 137kW or 416Nm will be available.

Kia’s 1.6-litre has been paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and provides improved low-down torque on the GT-Line and SX+ variants.

The Sportage, due to arrive down under in October, will be available in eight colours with five new to the range.

Pricing and detailed specifications have yet to be released.
