MG Motors NZ has launched an electric vehicle (EV) charge unit programme to boost tourism and the uptake of EVs.

The initiative allows for up to 3,000 heavily subsidised chargers to be made available to regional accommodation providers in this country and across the ditch.

The campaign made its debut in Australia in late November. Almost 100 applications from hotels are under review for wall-mounted units with uptake expected to reach at least 300 by the end of 2022.

“MG believes a customer should be able to travel to the same location in an EV as in a petrol-powered car,” says Peter Ciao, chief executive of MG Motor in both countries.

“Our goal is to reduce owners’ range anxiety on long trips, lower emissions and increase greener ways to travel.”

MG’s 7kW ChargeHub can recharge a typical EV battery in one-quarter of the time it takes with the typical emergency cable supplied with a car, while the 11kW unit is suitable for three-phase power-equipped homes and businesses.

Typically retailing at $2,090 for the 7kW single-phase charger or $2,290 for the larger 11kW unit, successful operators will be provided with a kit for a one-off fee of $115.

The ChargeHub is compatible with all type-two port-equipped EVs. Private motorists can buy the units at MG dealerships.
