Major changes at JEVIC

Gordon Shaw has been appointed chairman and director of JEVIC Japan in a non-executive capacity.

The announcement comes with Tsutomu Aoyagi taking on the role of company president and its new representative director.

Shaw, pictured, has also been appointed as the new executive officer representing the global inspection segment of the Optimus Group – a decision in-line with other initiatives the group is undertaking to strengthen this part of its business.

He will maintain his roles as chief secretary of Optimus’ conflicts of interest council and chairman of its inspection segment strategy committee. In addition, Shaw maintains his current role as director of Vehicle Inspection New Zealand (VINZ).

Aaron Treadaway has become a director of JEVIC NZ. He is the current executive officer for JEVIC Japan and holds the role of international operations general manager. Treadaway has been with JEVIC Japan since 2005 and was formerly MAF’s Japan offshore programme manager.

Euan Philpot will continue as a director of VINZ, and director and chief executive officer of JEVIC NZ.

The aim of Optimus’ inspection segment “is to help make transportation safe around the world by delivering inspection services and products that give people assurance of safety and compliance”.

A company statement adds: “As the group emerges from the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Shaw’s responsibility is to use his experience and international connections to ensure that all business units in the group’s inspection segment are delivering services based on a programme of continuous improvement leading to global best-in-class practice.”

About the group

Optimus Group Company Ltd is a global business comprising more than 20 companies in the export, transportation, inspection, servicing, sale and financing of motor vehicles – principally from Japan – to markets such as New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center Co Ltd (JEVIC) and VINZ are part of the inspection segment of the Optimus Group, a Japanese company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

JEVIC was established in 2001 and its Japanese company is known for its work in pre-shipment inspection and international certification of cargo. Its services are primarily for used-vehicle inspection but extend to vessels and containers. JEVIC has been approved by the NZTA and the Ministry for Primary Industries, and respective predecessors, for the provision of border and biosecurity inspections for about 19 years. JEVIC also holds several regulatory approvals in other jurisdictions.

VINZ was established in 1995 and has been certified by the NZTA and its predecessors to provide inspection services for 25 years. It is a specialist vehicle-inspection services provider of warrants and certificates of fitness, entry certification and pre-purchase vehicle appraisal for private vehicle owners and fleet.

VINZ employs 200 staff, comprised of full-time, part-time and casual employees. It has testing stations and used vehicle entry-compliance inspection staff and facilities across New Zealand in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Lower Hutt, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Gore.

Since February 27, 2013, VINZ has been a wholly owned subsidiary of JEVIC NZ. From March 2015, JEVIC NZ has been ultimately owned by Optimus Group.
