Kiwi CEO excited for Toyota’s future

Toyota New Zealand’s chief executive officer says he is “excited for what lies ahead”, after its parent company in Japan announced key executive changes.

A change of leadership for Toyota Motor Corporation has been revealed, with Akio Toyoda to become chairman from April 1 and Koji Sato replacing him in the roles of president and chief executive.

Toyoda has led the multinational company for 13 years and transformed it from a mass producer of vehicles to a mobility technology company, delivering mobility for all.

Neeraj Lala, Toyota NZ chief executive officer, says Toyoda has had to navigate the business through some tough times, such as the global financial recession and the Covid pandemic.

He adds that the outgoing chief executive has also brought back excitement to the marque with driver-focused cars such as the Toyota Gazoo Racing range of sports cars.

“He had the vision to ensure that we focused on all technology powertrains, to meet customer needs around the globe while still delivering on his promise to make ever better cars with the next generations of some of our most iconic nameplates,” explains Lala, pictured.

“He stands down as president of Toyota in a strong position and he will be missed.”

Lala notes Sato is also a car lover and recently personally purchased a classic and rare Toyota Corolla AE86 as a car restoration project.

“He has committed to ensuring that we continue to demonstrate the commitment to making cars better through concrete actions and products, such as accelerating the shift to electrification and engaging in car making that responds to diverse value and local needs,” continues Lala.

“We are excited for what lies ahead for the company.”
