Kia’s ute set for NZ

Kia will be launching its ute called the Tasman in New Zealand next year.

The new model has undergone extensive durability testing, as well as ride and handling programmes, across Australia.

“The launch of any new model is an exciting moment in time,” says Todd McDonald, managing director of Kia NZ. “But when it’s something as uniquely antipodean as a new ute, then it’s extra special.

“We can’t wait to introduce it to Kiwi customers. We’re thrilled to be expanding our portfolio with something as desirable as a ute and are confident it will find favour with people who need a workhorse, but also a practical vehicle which fits the bill for weekend activities.”

McDonald adds the Tasman will be a welcome addition to Kia’s line-up and that it’s already renowned as the most Aussie Kia ever, “a quality that is equally applicable to this country”.

“It’s been designed and engineered for our challenging conditions. It’s as dependable and reliable as the best working dog down on the farm.

“The Tasman will offer an attractive and viable alternative for those who demand the functionality and versatility only a true-blue ute can provide.”

Media feeding frenzy

Kia captured the imagination and excitement of its fans and the media through a uniquely star-studded Tasman teaser campaign across the ditch in the run-up to its official launch by the company.

With a backdrop that celebrated sports culture, advertisements hinted at its rugged capabilities and alignment with the adventurous spirit of Australasia. Notably, the ad integrated the Tasman name.

While full details of the model have yet to be revealed by the marque, the ute is expected to feature multiple powertrains. Initial indications suggest a diesel variant, possibly a 2.2-litre CRDi turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Tasman may also offer a three-litre V6 diesel and a 3.3-litre V6 petrol twin-turbo engine for higher performance. An electric version may come a year or two later.
