Kei-class electric boost
Nissan and Mitsubishi are teaming up to make kei-class electric vehicles (EVs).
They plan to launch the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X (Cross) in Japan next month.
The Sakura, pictured, boasts a 4.8-metre turning radius and range of up to 180kW with a 47kW motor producing 195Nm of torque.
Despite its classification as a mini-vehicle, Nissan claims the Sakura has a spacious interior. It also boasts an automated parking system and three drive modes – eco, standard and sport, which provide optimal performance depending on the situation.
The lithium-ion battery that has a proven track record of performance and reliability in the Leaf makes its appearance in the Sakura. It utilises a special stacking method of its cell to minimise the battery’s impact on the vehicle’s interior.
Nissan claims both EVs will have “sufficient range for everyday use”. They offer “a smooth and powerful driving experience as well as high levels of safety and comfort through the adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems and connectivity”.
The kei-car segment is the most dominant in Japan. It boasted 1.65 million sales last year – or 37 per cent of total vehicle sales.
