June sales on track to be year’s best

Vehicle sales for this month are already 20 per cent up on May’s numbers, according to the latest statistics from Apexdealerdata.com, and there’s still a week of trading left to go.

Evidence of a busier market is also shown in the data for last week with the average days to sell a car dropping from 66 to 65 and the average number of sales per dealer increasing from 12 to 14. There were 825 dealers who sold vehicles last week.

Matt Grant, chief executive of Apexdealerdata.com, suggests changes to the clean car discount being introduced from July 1 – with increased fees for high emitters and changes to rebates for low and zero-emissions models – may be a key factor.

“The market has seen a lift of more than 20 per cent in sales so far compared with last month and is on track to be the best month of the year,” he explains.

The best-performing dealer last week was in the South Island and sold 55 cars. It had 96 per cent of the stock priced “on market”, which is what the Apexdealerdata.com system calculates as the best price for the fastest return and most value for a car.

At the other end of the scale, only two vehicles were sold at the worst-performing dealer in the same period and 96 per cent of its stock was categorized as over-priced.

The Apexdealerdata.com market report appears every Monday on Autofile Online. Its latest number-crunching also reveals 65 per cent of all stock at dealers’ yards priced on market sold in under 45 days.
