Industry honours late MP

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) has paid tribute to Nikki Kaye after the former National Party MP died, aged 44, following a long battle with cancer.

Kaye, pictured, was an MP for the Auckland Central electorate from 2008 to 2020 and for a few months served as deputy leader for National under Todd Muller.

Greig Epps, VIA chief executive, says the organisation is deeply saddened by her death and honours her contributions to New Zealand and her “enduring impact on policy”.

“During her distinguished 12 years in Parliament, Nikki Kaye exemplified integrity and a commitment to public service, particularly during her time as a minister,” adds Epps.

“VIA engaged with her on matters relating to ACC, education, and immigration, and we were always impressed by her passion, attention to detail, and her genuine investment in addressing the issues at hand.”

In January 2013, Kaye was appointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister John Key and became minister for food safety, civil defence and youth affairs, as well as being associate minister of education and immigration.

After the 2014 general election, she was made Minister for ACC and retained her other portfolios, except for food safety and associate immigration.

She was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2016 and took sick leave from politics before returning to Parliament the following year to resume full duties.

“Nikki's ability to lead with strength and compassion was evident not only in her ministerial roles but also in her personal resilience,” says Epps.

“Her courageous return to Parliament after overcoming breast cancer in 2017 inspired many and underscored her dedication to making a difference for New Zealanders.”

“Our thoughts are with Nikki’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service and will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of working with her.”
