Hybrid Hilux on horizon

Toyota New Zealand has announced an electrified Hilux will be arriving here in early 2024 as the marque seeks to slash its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The hybrid version of the ute will combine a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission with a 48V battery, electric-motor genartor and other components.

Toyota NZ adds the hybrid technology will not have any impact on the towing capability of the Hilux, with the 4WD models having the same 3,500kg braked towing capacity as the current model on the market.

Neeraj Lala, chief executive, says the introduction of the hybrid Hilux is a key element in the decarbonisation plans of Toyota NZ.

The company has a target of reducing the tailpipe CO2 emissions of its vehicle range by at least 46 per cent by 2030.

While it is on track to meet this goal, the introduction of the new Hilux will “significantly move the dial to reaching the target”.

Lala expects the arrival of the hybrid Hilux, with the first units set to be available for customer delivery in the first quarter of 2024, will have a significant impact in the New Zealand ute scene.

“Toyota is transitioning from a traditional automaker to a mobility company focused on sustainable technologies and transport,” he adds.

“The hybrid Hilux will be an important addition to our range and will enable many tradies, farmers, and businesses to reduce their carbon footprints.

“We have maintained for a long time, that hybrid technology is the best solution to decarbonisation until fully battery electric technology is both available and affordable.

“Our ambition is to offer a fully electric Hilux, however, until that is available, hybrid remains the best technology and will only drive our overall emissions down further.”

In addition to delivering improved fuel economy, the hybrid system of the vehicle will also enable a stop/start system, improved off-road driveability and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness.

More details on its specifications and performance will be available closer to launch.
