Hybrid first for marque in NZ
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand (MMNZ) has confirmed the new Outlander Sport HEV will be available in dealerships from December.
And the XLS 2WD will be launching at the special introductory price of $39,990 plus on-road costs for a limited time.
The marque’s first hybrid electric vehicle for the Kiwi market combines official fuel economy of 4l/100km “with the space, versatility and features to suit modern lifestyles”.
The two-model line-up comprises the XLS and higher-specification VRX, which is available from $46,990 or $48,490 for the two-tone VRX.
Tony Johnston, MMNZ’s chief operating officer, says the combination of introductory pricing, low fuel consumption and everyday practicality gives Outlander Sport broad appeal.
“At $39,990 plus on-road costs, the XLS offers Kiwis an accessible way into an electrified SUV without having to plug in.
“It’s also an SUV designed to fit the way New Zealanders live. It’s compact and easy to drive around town, but there’s plenty of room inside for passengers and gear with the versatility for everything from the daily commute to weekends away.”
The Outlander Sport uses Mitsubishi’s Generation 2 HEV system, which combines a 1.6-litre MIVEC petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor. The system automatically selects the most efficient combination of electric and petrol power according to driving conditions and battery charge.
Regenerative braking helps to replenish the battery while driving. The overall result is combined fuel consumption of 4l/100km and carbon dioxide emissions of 95g/km on the WLTP.
Seven selectable drive modes add versatility and optimised performance for New Zealand’s variable terrain and driving conditions.
Normal mode provides everyday driving, while tarmac, wet, gravel and mud modes tailor vehicle behaviour to different surfaces. EV priority mode prioritises electric operation and charge mode allows the drive battery to be replenished while on the move.
Measuring 4,390mm long and 1,810mm wide, the Outlander Sport’s compact dimensions are “well suited” to urban driving, while its 2,650mm wheelbase “helps create a comfortable five-seat cabin”.
Rear passengers benefit from a completely flat floor and an eight-position reclining seatback, while the 40-20-40 split-folding rear seat provides flexibility when carrying a mix of people and gear. The 329l luggage compartment is wide for two large suitcases side by side with a further 21l of underfloor storage.
A panoramic glass roof with electric sunshade is standard on the XLS and VRX. The XLS also comes standard with a 12.3-inch smartphone-link display audio system, eight-inch digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, active yaw control, reversing camera and 18-inch alloys.
The VRX adds a Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium Audio, wireless smartphone charging, ambient lighting, multi-around view monitor, six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and hands-free power tailgate.
The Outlander Sport introduces a “fresh interpretation” of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design by combining a strong SUV stance with louvre-style daytime running lights, horizontal t-shaped rear lights and the “silky and solid” design concept previewed earlier this year.
Six exterior colours are available – rose red, volt yellow, graphite grey, aspiring white, blade silver and pitch black – with five contrasting black-roof combinations available on the two-tone VRX.
The HEV kicks off a busy end to 2026 for MMNZ as the first of three new models arriving before Christmas. It will be followed by the ASX VR-e and Pajero. Johnston says: “We’re bringing Kiwi drivers three very different new choices in a matter of weeks.”
