Guide to emissions published

An emissions guide is now available on the Rightcar website in support of the government’s clean car programme.

Waka Kotahi has published a downloadable spreadsheet in the dealers’ section of the Rightcar website, pictured, to assist traders in identifying carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of models they are intending to import and sell.

This tool should be used to identify stock to register before the end of March and as a guide when purchasing stock, says Malcolm Yorston, technical manager of the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA).

He adds: “We remind you that from April 1 vehicles emitting over 190gm/km of CO2 will attract a penalty that must be paid by the customer at registration.

“Customers purchasing vehicles emitting less than 140gm/km and having a safety rating on the Rightcar website of three stars or better will be able to claim a rebate from April 1 as well.”

VIA reminds members that some popular models, such as the Honda Fit up to 2019 and Suzuki Swift, may not qualify for rebates because Rightcar has them rated as having two stars for safety.

A spokesman for Waka Kotahi says: “In support of the clean car programme, and the implementation of the clean car discount and clean car standard, we have provided a downloadable file of WLTP CO2 values.

“These have been provided for most makes and models of used vehicles registered in New Zealand. These values will soon be applied to vehicle records displayed on the Rightcar website, and later will be used for the calculation of clean car fees and rebates.

“Once the government has agreed the rates and calculations, we will provide additional services for dealers to calculate discount fee and rebate dollar values.”
