GSR headlines BEV range

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand (MMNZ) reports its all-new ASX VR-e battery electric vehicle (BEV) range will arrive on our shores in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The ASX VR-e is the second in a wave of new models from the marque and follows hot on the heels of the recently announced Outlander Sport HEV.

Both models aim to strengthen MMNZ’s established electrified range alongside the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants of the Outlander and Eclipse Cross

The ASX VR-e range will be headlined by a high-performance GSR model with Exceed, XLS and LS options also available.

The ASX nameplate builds on the heritage of the compact SUV, which has been one of New Zealand’s most successful passenger cars and which will continue to be available alongside the VR-e range for the foreseeable future.

The VR-e designation is derived from the Galant VR-4, Mitsubishi’s iconic high-performance sports sedan, and “reflects the model’s sporty driving character, electrified technology and advanced features”.

Tony Johnston, MMNZ’s chief operating officer, says the all-electric ASX VR-e reflects the brand’s long-standing commitment to helping Kiwis transition from traditionally powered vehicles.

He adds: “Mitsubishi introduced the first mass-production EV to New Zealand in 2011 with the iMiEV before leading the growth of plug-in hybrid technology through the best-selling Outlander PHEV.

“With the arrival of Outlander Sport HEV and ASX VR-e, we’re providing customers with more choices that align with their evolving lifestyles and development of local infrastructure.”

Developed in partnership with Italian design house Pininfarina and EV manufacturer Foxtron, and backed by MMNZ’s local expertise, the ASX VR-e represents an “exciting addition” to the market.

“For New Zealanders considering an electric vehicle, the ASX VR-e combines advanced technology with the confidence of a brand they know and trust,” adds Johnston.

“In a rapidly evolving market, buyers can be confident their ASX VR-e is backed by a company with deep roots in New Zealand, and the experience, infrastructure and commitment to support them well into the future.”

The BEV’s exterior emphasises aerodynamic performance. Key features include an s-duct, which channels airflow from the centre of the front bumper over the hood surface, and active grille shutters, which help reduce drag according to driving conditions.

Horizontal stripe motifs have been incorporated into the front and rear-lighting signatures, and the rear pillars and dedicated wheel design create a “unified and modern appearance”.

The horizontal LED lighting and dynamic welcome lights enhance the vehicle’s styling, while the stripe pattern on the C-pillar contributes to a cohesive design identity. Detailed specifications, pricing and extra information will be announced in the coming months.
