Gruntier Hilux heading to NZ

Toyota has confirmed its Hilux GR Sport is coming to New Zealand, with the first batch of models due to arrive around the middle of this year.
The marque says the vehicle, which is inspired by its Dakar Rally race utes, promises an “even more rewarding driving experience” with increased control, responsiveness and power.
Benefiting from Toyota Gazoo Racing's experience in motorsport, the Hilux GR Sport’s power and torque from the 2.8-litre engine has been boosted by 10 per cent to 165kW and 550Nm thanks to a revised turbocharger and fuel-injection control.
The model also benefits from advances already introduced in the new Hilux, including an automatic limited-slip differential and Active Traction Control.
Suspension upgrades and noise and vibration countermeasures are part of the package for the sporty ute, which also has wider tracks with redesigned wishbones and a reinforced rear axle to help it handle tough driving conditions.
Inside, the monochromatic black theme is set off with vivid sports pedals and red seatbelts. GR branding is featured inside and out, including on the steering wheel, headrests, red brake callipers, and exterior badges.
Steve Prangnell, Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of new vehicles, says adding the Hilux GR Sport to its line-up fits into the company’s strategy of offering the widest range of vehicles that meet the needs of Kiwi motorists.
“From electrified vehicles such as hybrid electric cars and SUVs to highly functional utes and vans, Toyota is committed to reducing our tailpipe carbon emissions by 46 per cent by 2030 while still offering customers the vehicle of their choice,” he explains.
“We plan to do this through a balanced portfolio of products, which includes Hilux GR Sport, which will make up five per cent of our total Hilux volume for 2023.”
