Chinese motor giant MG has confirmed that its first electric vehicle (EV) - the eZS - will be launching in New Zealand, with the EV to go on sale in 2020.

The ZS EV was launched in China in March 2019, but MG Motor parent company SAIC has its eye on export markets for the new model, reports Stuff.

The ZS EV has a 44.5kWh battery giving an NEDC range of 335km. It can be recharged to 80 per cent in 40 minutes using a DC fast charger.

While EVs are new for the MG brand, SAIC has extensive experience with the technology in China through its other brands, such as Roewe.

SAIC sold 140,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2018, up 100 per cent over 2017. It aims to hit global NEV sales of 600,000 by 2020.

Pricing and specification is yet to be revealed but MG Motor is promising a "value" proposition rather than one that's just cheap.

The three models that make up the current M line-up in New Zealand, are the MG3, ZS, and GS. Given the affordability of the current line-up, the ZS has a starting price of $23,990, an electric version of the ZS could become New Zealand's cheapest new EV.
