A new training programme for the automotive industry has been launched and aims to bring fresh talent to a “highly specialised sector”.

The New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Machining (Level 4) is being offered by MITO and teaches people how to effectively diagnose and repair components in a range of vehicles.

Janet Lane, MITO’s chief executive, says: “We have worked closely with industry to ensure the training programme is specifically tailored to industry requirements and will equip learners with the skills necessary to excel in their roles.”

The course, which is expected to take two years to complete, allows learners to complete theory elements at their own pace and combines practical training, assessment and eLearning.

Keith Wood, executive director of the New Zealand Engine Reconditioners Association, says the new programme will allow existing staff to develop their knowledge as well as attracting new talent to the industry.

“We are a small, bespoke sector,” he notes. “Because of that, it’s vital that people in our industry future-proof their businesses.”
