Clean-car costs for top sellers

A breakdown of the rebates and fees likely to face the top-selling new vehicles under the clean-car discount scheme has been produced by the Ministry of Transport (MoT).

Officials have detailed the anticipated extra costs or discounts that will be applicable from 2022 based on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the World Harmonised Light-duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

The discounts for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) start six months earlier and can be claimed from July 1.

Tesla’s Model 3, pictured, is the number-one EV here and with zero emissions looks set to claim the full $8,625 discount.

At the other end of the scale, the MoT identifies the top-selling high-emitter is a diesel Ford Ranger and that will likely face a $2,760 penalty. Its market rival, the Toyota Hilux, is on course for a $2,880 fee, according to the ministry’s breakdown.

The figures in the table below are as of June 9 but the MoT notes the rebates and fees are indicative at this stage and subject to legislation being passed.
