Chief executive quits MTA

Craig Pomare has announced he is leaving his post as chief executive officer at the Motor Trade Association (MTA) to take up the same position at the Police Credit Union (PCU).

He has held the top job at the MTA since June 2016 after previously spending two years as its member services general manager.

In the past he has also held positions at Westpac Bank, the Medical Assurance Society and AXA.

Pomare, pictured, will finish at the MTA on January 21, 2022, and is set to start his new role with the PCU on January 31, 2022.

He says leading the MTA has been a “pleasure and a privilege” with one the most recent challenges being guiding members through the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m very proud to have helped support members, and I’m very proud of how members have supported each other,” he adds.

“The decision to leave was incredibly difficult. I’ve loved the time I’ve spent with MTA, meeting members up and down the country, and being part of an organisation that is at the heart of New Zealand.

“I’m very proud of the team, grateful to the board, and I know MTA is in excellent hands.”

As chief executive, Pomare set up MTA’s eight regions, oversaw the creation of the MTA Toolbox, and allocated staff resources to drive member events and activities – resulting in a five-fold increase in events provided to members.

Greig Epps, advocacy and strategy manager, says MTA members were alerted of Pomare’s decision to resign last week.

“The board will bring in an interim chief executive officer and they are looking for that person at the moment,” Epps told Autofile Online.

“When that person is in place they will then conduct the search for a full-time replacement.”

Bob Boniface, MTA president, says the organisation is sorry to see Pomare leave but is grateful for the leadership he has provided over the years.

“It’s a measure of how successful and well-regarded Craig is that he has been head-hunted to lead a larger membership organisation.”

Lane Todd, PCU’s board chairman, in announcing its appointment in a newsletter to members on December 17, says Pomare “brings a strong passion, focus and experience in membership-owned organisations”.
