Celebrating Kombi’s 75 years

Volkswagen is celebrating 75 years of its famous Kombi at the 2025 VW Nationals in Blenheim this Easter weekend.

A highlight of the event, from April 18-21, will be a showcase of the evolution of the Kombi from its launch in 1950 through to the debut of its 2025 counterpart, Volkswagen’s first fully electric van, the ID. Buzz.

The new model will be on display throughout the long weekend beside KEV (Kombi Electric Vehicle), a reimagined 1966 Kombi that has been transformed to help celebrate the brand’s past and future.

KEV was created in New Zealand to show how classic vehicles can be given new life through electrification as part of Volkswagen’s broader push to reduce emissions and inspire owners to consider their own electric journey.

Kevin Richards, head of commercial vehicles, says: “The Kombi is a cultural icon that holds a special place in the hearts of Kiwis. Whether it’s been part of a road trip or simply admired from afar, almost everyone has a Kombi story.

“To see it come full circle with the arrival of the ID. Buzz, our first fully electric van, is a really special moment.

“The 2025 VW Nationals are the perfect place to celebrate where we’ve come from and where we’re headed.”

The annual event is organised by the Boomtown Dubbers and brings together Volkswagen enthusiasts from across the country.
