Bridges named NZTA chairman

Simon Bridges, a former Minister of Transport and the current chief executive officer of the Auckland Business Chamber, has been appointed as the new chairman of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

He replaces Cassandra Crowley, who has held the position in an acting role since December following the resignation of former chairman, Paul Reynolds.

Bridges, pictured, had a successful legal career before being elected to Parliament in 2008 as the National Party representative for Tauranga.

He held that seat until his retirement from politics in 2022 and later that year he secured the top job at the Auckland Business Chamber.

During his political career, Bridges held a variety of ministerial portfolios including transport, economic development and communications.

Simeon Brown, Minister of Transport, announced Bridges’ appointment at the NZTA for a three-year term on March 11.

“Simon brings extensive experience and knowledge in transport policy and governance to the role,” says Brown.

“He will have a strong focus on delivery and outcomes and ensure that NZTA is working to implement the government policy statement on land transport, which will provide the infrastructure New Zealanders need.

“Transport is a critical part of the government’s plan for economic growth and productivity, and I look forward to working closely with Simon over the coming years to deliver the government’s transport objectives.”

Brown also thanks Crowley for stepping in as acting chair of the agency over the past three months. “Her strong leadership, advice and support have been invaluable during this transitional period.”
