Braking issue prompts recall

BMW New Zealand has issued a recall for more than 800 of its vehicles that may have been impacted by a potential braking problem.
The alert affects vehicles in the X1, X5, X6, X7, pictured, and XM ranges, as well as some in the 2 Series, 3 Series and 7 Series line-ups.
BMW’s recall notice says its quality control has revealed some of the above vehicles manufactured in 2022 and 2023 could suffer from signal interference in the electronics of the brake system.
“In very rare cases, this can increase the operating force required to actuate the brake,” it adds. “In addition, other brake control functions, such as ABS and dynamic stability control, are not available.
“You will be informed before or during the journey if this signal interference occurs by the brake warning lights in the vehicle cockpit lighting up.”
BMW NZ notes drivers will also see a check control message on the vehicle’s central display that advises them to “avoid abrupt braking as much as possible”.
The company is working with dealerships to contact affected customers and arrange the installation of replacement parts.
