Boldly driving into future
Hyundai has unveiled a futuristic design for its new-generation Kona sub-compact SUV.
It will be available in four variants – all-electric, hybrid electric, internal combustion engine (ICE) and sporty N Line – with a universal architecture and unique styling for each.
The all-new SUV has evolved into a larger yet still urban-centric model with bolder styling that conveys a more dynamic road presence and driver-centric interior. To provide maximised “living space”, it has grown to 4,355mm in length, which is 150mm longer than the previous generation based on the all-electric variant.
Unlike most cars with a variety of powertrains, the Kona started off with an electric vehicle (EV) design, which was then adapted for the ICE, HEV and N Line models.
This unconventional approach has allowed Hyundai to bring tech-centric design thinking to all variants. Despite the shared architecture, all variants have distinctive futuristic styling.
An all-new distinctive nose characterises the front section, which contributes to the car’s smooth aerodynamic performance.
The stretched “seamless horizon” lamp is pixelated on the EV. The Kona’s use of parametric pixels also propagates a distinctive element from the marque’s popular EV line-up.
A larger interior living space for the all-new Kona provides practical features and an evolved in-car experience to accommodate diverse lifestyles.
The EV-derived universal architecture accommodates a sporty layout with floating horizontal C-Pad to emphasise the SUV’s slim and wide interior, providing a versatile space for driver and passengers.
The 12.3-inch dual wide displays and floating module impart a high-tech impression, while ambient lighting enhances user experience and convenience.
With the column type shift-by-wire relocated from the centre console to behind the steering wheel, it provides an uncluttered layout and additional space for belongings in the central tunnel.
