Blaze hits car yard

An investigation into a warehouse blaze at an Auckland car yard and storage lot is continuing after flames devastated the site and a number of vehicles.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the incident at Elite Auto Selection on Maurice Road, Penrose, just before 1am on Sunday, June 8.
About 50 firefighters were on the scene at the peak of the blaze as crews from 14 stations across Auckland attended.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson says they deployed nine fire trucks, three ladder units, one command vehicle and multiple support vehicles to the site.
The fire in the building, which measures about 125 metres long and 30 metres wide, was contained within a few hours and by daybreak on Sunday only two fire trucks and an investigator remained on site.
“Less than half of the building was used for business and contained around 30 cars. The rest of the building was used for private storage,” the spokesperson adds.
“The cause of the fire is currently being investigated and we can’t advise when it will be complete.”
Auckland City assistant commander Roger Callister says crews had to deal with multiple explosions inside the warehouse, reports the NZ Herald.
He estimated the fire spread through 75 per cent of the building before they had it under control.
Elite Auto Selection’s director declined to comment to Autofile Online about the incident.
