Best-sellers in States

The Ford F-Series was America’s top-selling new vehicle of 2025, with Toyota’s RAV4 coming in as the most popular SUV and its Camry taking the gong for top car.

The list of best-sellers in the US always highlights the uniqueness of the market there compared to most of the planet. Pick-up trucks and SUVs continued to dominate last year, while traditional passenger cars played a much smaller role.

At the top of the rankings was the F-Series, pictured, by a wide margin. Ford delivered 828,832 such trucks in 2025, an increase of 8.3 per cent compared with the previous year.

The F-Series, which is available as a right-hand-drive model across the Tasman, secured its 49th consecutive year as America’s best-selling truck and 44 years as its most popular vehicle.

The Silverado confirmed its position as the blue oval’s closest rival, but the gap widened. Chevrolet recorded 558,709 Silverado sales, keeping the full-size ute firmly entrenched as one of the core pillars of the US market.

The RAV4 was the best-selling non-pick-up with 479,288 units in 2025, a modest year-on-year increase that nevertheless underscores the enduring popularity of compact crossovers. The Honda CR-V came overall with 403,768 sales.

Utes filled much of the top 10. The Ram Pick-Up placed fifth with 374,059 units with the GMC Sierra closely behind on 356,218. GMC remains a major force in the premium truck segment, particularly among buyers seeking higher-trim and luxury-orientated models.

One of the standout performers of 2025 was Chevrolet’s Equinox, which surged 40.5 per cent to 332,301 sales. This jump reflected strong demand for competitively priced compact SUVs, especially among buyers downsizing from larger models.

Sedans remained relevant but clearly secondary in volume. The Camry reached 316,185 registrations, reinforcing its role as the most successful passenger car in the US, even as SUVs continue to draw buyers away from the segment.

For example, the Mustang is currently Ford’s only traditional “car” on sale there.

Electric vehicles also featured prominently in the rankings, but that’s unlikely to be repeated in 2026 following the cancellation of federal buying incentives towards the end of 2025.

The Tesla is estimated to have delivered around 300,000 Model Ys last year, making it not only the best-selling EV but also one of the top-selling cars overall. Estimates for Model Y sales in the US in 2025 vary from around 270,000 to more than 320,000.

Rounding out the top 10, Toyota’s Tacoma posted one of the strongest growth rates of the year, rising more than 42 per cent to 274,638 sales. This highlights the growing popularity of midsize pick-ups as alternatives to full-size trucks.

Overall, the 2025 rankings confirmed a familiar pattern – trucks and SUVs dominate US sales, while only a handful of passenger cars remain volume leaders in an increasingly ute-focused market.
