Bayswater takes on franchise

Bayswater Vehicle Group has officially taken full ownership of Hastings Kia after acquiring the remaining 50 per cent shareholding in the company.

The business had been led by retiring dealer principal Mark Cooper, who played a significant role in its growth and success over the past two decades. 

Under Cooper’s leadership, Hastings Kia evolved from a small operation on Heretaunga Street into a modern flagship dealership on Karamu Road, earning numerous national and international accolades. 

In 2019, the business achieved Kia’s prestigious Platinum Prestige status, recognising it as one of marque’s leading dealerships globally.

Founded in 1990 by managing director Rob Townshend and joined by business partner Mel Chan, Bayswater has grown from a single dealership into one of the Hawke’s Bay’s largest automotive groups. It represents more than 20 brands across the region.

Townshend says bringing Hastings Kia fully into the Bayswater family marks an exciting milestone for the business and reflects the group’s ongoing commitment to Hawke’s Bay.

He adds: “Mark has built an outstanding dealership with a reputation for exceptional customer service and performance.

Co-director Mel Chan says the acquisition reflects Bayswater’s long-term vision for the region.

Paul Brown, chief executive officer of Bayswater Vehicle Group, says the acquisition will also strengthen the group’s growing presence on Karamu Road.

“Hastings Kia complements our existing BMW and Mini dealerships,” he adds. “Over the coming months we’ll continue expanding the precinct with Nissan, BYD and Chery joining adjacent sites.

“Customers will have access to one of the widest selections of new vehicles in Hawke’s Bay, all supported by Bayswater’s experienced sales and after-sales teams.”

Today, the group operates seven parts and service centres across Hawke’s Bay providing factory-trained servicing, repairs, tyres, windscreen replacements and genuine manufacturer support.

The acquisition of Hastings Kia further strengthens Bayswater’s commitment to the region and “reinforces its position as Hawke’s Bay’s leading automotive group” as it continues to invest in local people and businesses.
