Ballsy campaign wins big
When JAC teamed up with Testicular Cancer NZ and Colenso BBDO to give away a T9 ute in exchange for men checking their balls, blokes sat up and took notice.
Now the awards are piling up. The Lump Lottery campaign has had a big few weeks on the awards circuit.
First up, it took home three Silver Effies at this month’s Effie Awards Aotearoa, recognising the campaign across the charity and not for profit, insights and strategic thinking, and positive change categories.
That’s on top of gold, silver and bronze at the London International Awards where the initiative was recognised internationally for health and pharma and public service creative.
And the numbers behind it are even more impressive. Kiwi men headed to LumpLottery.co.nz during Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, learned how to check themselves and went in the draw to win a brand-new JAC T9.
Some 13,478 completed a self-check, 898 reported finding a lump and 274 sought medical advice. In a campaign about a cancer with a 96 per cent survival rate when caught early, those numbers really matter.
The campaign, pictured above, was fronted by All Blacks legend Buck Shelford.
Equal parts hilarious and important, he brought the right energy to a campaign that had to walk the line between humour and genuine health awareness.
Andrew Craw, general manager of JAC NZ, says the campaign delivered well beyond what the team expected. “When Colenso BBDO and Testicular Cancer came to us with this idea, we knew it was something special.
“A ute is a pretty good incentive to get blokes to do something they’ve been putting off and we’re pretty proud to have been part of a campaign that may well have saved lives. The awards are cherries on top.”
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer affecting young Kiwis with around 182 cases diagnosed every year. Head to www.lumplottery.co.nz to learn how to check and you catch the video campaign online at www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDKG8xAUWrs
