The Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association (LVVTA) has announced that after-market cast-iron I-beam front axles will be phased out of its certification system.

The change follows almost 15 years of testing introduced after such an axle failed in New Zealand in 2012.

Since then, the LVVTA has tested more than 360 cast-iron I-beam axles with a significant number rejected for failing to meet accepted international standards for iron ductility.

“Despite ongoing engagement with manufacturers and suppliers, inconsistent material quality continues to be found,” says a spokesperson for the association.

A phase-out period is now in place. After December 31, 2027, the after-market cast-iron axles will generally only be accepted for LVV certification if already been issued with an acceptable test certificate before that date.

Owners with untested such axles should arrange testing well in advance because the LVVTA cannot guarantee those submitted in the final weeks or months can be tested before the cut-off date.

Existing LVV certified vehicles are not affected, and forged steel I-beam axles and tube axles with forged steel ends will continue to be accepted.

“Anyone buying new is encouraged to choose a forged steel I-beam axle and obtain evidence of its construction from the supplier or manufacturer,” adds the LVVTA. An information sheets is available by emailing lvvta.org.nz.
