An auction held by Autosure has amassed thousands of dollars to fund research into cancer.

The event held by the company in Auckland on March 16 raised $3,385 for the Gut Cancer Foundation.

“I’m pleased to report that our auction was a huge success,” says Natalie Ross-Murphy, marketing manager. “The amazing team support, having our partners join us for a great get-together, and the generous, enthusiastic and competitive bidding made this event even better than we had dreamed.”

She adds that donations can be made up until the end of this month by logging onto giveitup.nz/t/autosure. The money raised by the company will help the Gut Cancer Foundation with its clinical research and trials, and to improve the outcome for about 15 Kiwis a day who are diagnosed with the condition.

The fundraising drive was held in support of the organisation’s campaign called Giving It Up, which takes place in March. The idea is to lay off sugar and booze, and get off the sofa, for the whole month.

Cancers of the digestive system are the most common form of cancer in New Zealand and they are among the most deadly.

People who are diagnosed will only have a 50-50 chance of living for five more years. But right now, there’s a massive shortage of funding for gut-cancer research.”

The aim is for every dollar raised to “kick cancer in the guts”, with the money helping to beat bowel, pancreatic cancer and stomach cancer to name just a few. You can visit gutcancer.org.nz to find out more.
