Audi recalls cars over fire risk

Audi is recalling a number of TT models built between 2015 and 2019 after discovering the heightened risk of a fuel leak may lead to them catching fire.

The marque urges owners of such vehicles to contact the carmaker or an Audi dealer “without delay so that the work can be performed promptly”.

In its recall of April 7, Audi warns it cannot completely rule out that the fuel tank may suffer damage and leak in the event of an accident. “As a result, fuel could escape and ignite if it came into contact with hot surfaces,” the notice adds.

The same notice from Audi also call backs versions of its Q7 and Q5 after discovering problems with those models. For Q7s manufactured between 2016 and 2020, the bolted connection between the steering shaft and steering rack may not have been tightened to the required torque.

“This could lead to the bolted connection coming loose over time, which could result in restrictions when steering the vehicle,” Audi says.

In model years 2020 and 2021 of the Q5, the recall warns there may be increased pedal travel as a result of production tolerances.

“In this case, if an additional defect occurred in the brake circuit for the front axle, it would mean the minimum legal requirement for braking performance in the event of a brake circuit failure ¬– with rear-wheel braking only – could not be met in this very rare situation,” says the marque.

Owners of those affected vehicles are advised to urgently make an appointment to get the problems fixed.

Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Polo, model years 2012-14

Recall issued: March 2. The hazard: On vehicles with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, due to production deviations with a component of the mechatronic unit in connection with the high hydraulic system pressure, there can be a failure of that part. This causes an internal leak in the system and the warning lamp comes on. What to do: Contact a Volkswagen dealer.

Volkswagen Tiguan, model years 2017-19

Recall issued: March 2. The hazard: A non-approved material for rear coil springs was used on Tiguan Allspaces and Jettas. As a result, a coil spring can break and damage rear tyres.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class, model years 2017-18

Recall issued: March 9. The hazard: The bonding of the rear beltline trim strips may not correspond to the specifications. What to do: Contact a Mercedes-Benz service outlet.

Toyota Hiace, model years 2014-19

Recall issued: March 9. The hazard: In the Hiace 1TR’s engine-control unit (ECU), due to improper programming, the oil pressure may become excessive during gear changing of the automatic transmission. Repeated sudden acceleration may damage the transmission clutch causing a reduction in motive power. What to do: Contact a Toyota dealer or Toyota’s customer dialogue centre.

Mazda Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, model years 2012-18

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: There is a chance the engine fuel-injector seal may leak resulting in carbon deposits accumulating in the engine. As a result, the vehicles may suffer a gradual drop of performance, multiple warning lights displayed in the driver’s instrument cluster, a gradual increase in stopping distance or mechanical damage to the engine resulting in it stalling with no re-start. What to do: Enter your details at www.MazdaCampaignCentre.co.nz and a dealer will contact you.

Toyota Camry, Corolla, FJ, Highlander, Prado, model years 2013-19

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: A low-pressure fuel pump, located in the fuel tank, may include impellers that have been manufactured incorrectly. Deformation of the impeller may cause the fuel pump to become inoperative, which may result in check engine and master warning indicators lighting up, rough engine running, engine no start and or vehicle stall while driving at low speed. In rare instances, the vehicle stall may occur at higher speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. What to do: Contact a Toyota dealer or Toyota’s customer dialogue centre.

Isuzu FY Series, model year 2019

Recall issued: March 16. The hazard: The passenger-side seat belt may not lock when pulling the webbing rapidly. What to do: Contact your nearest Isuzu dealer.

Subaru Forester, Impreza, XV, model years 2017-20

Recall issued: March 30. The hazard: Due to improper engine-control module (ECM) programming, the ignition coil may be energised longer than designed after the engine is off, which may cause a short circuit. Furthermore, vehicles fitted with certain harness and igniter may cause a fuse to blow, resulting in engine stall and restart failure. What to do: Contact a Subaru dealer for reprogram of the ECM and inspection of ignition coil.

Can-Am Spyder RT, model year 2020

Recall issued: April 2. The hazard: In emergency-braking situations, the support that holds the brake mechanism could break and cause a total loss of braking capacity. This may increase the risk of a crash. What to do: Contact a BRP Can-Am on-road dealer.
