Volkswagen New Zealand has unveiled the all-new third generation Touareg.

According to the German marque, the new SUV builds on the success of the previous models with new technologies, updated design and dynamic handling properties.

The new Touareg is built on the same MLB platform as the Audi Q7, Bentley Betayga and the Porsche Cayenne and is a little longer (77mm) and wider (44mm) than the outgoing model, while the roofline has been lowered by 44mm.

There will initially be two models offered, the V6 and the V6 S.

Both are powered by a new generation 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel outputting 170kW of power and 500Nm of torque, while the S with improved hardware and ECU tuning, makes 210kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

Each uses an eight-speed auto and AWD is standard, Touareg retaining its 3500kg tow rating.

As for fuel-economy, the numbers are yet to be confirmed, as the new SUVs will be tested under the new WLTP fuel consumption measures.

Both models benefit from a full kit of active gadgets. Night vision is now an option, which uses a thermal imaging camera to detect upright pedestrians, cyclists and animals.

The new Touareg is the first Volkswagen model to come with front cross traffic assist, which uses radar sensors on the bumper to monitor crossing traffic at junctions and exits.

The Touareg goes on sale within the coming weeks and pricing starts from $92,990 for the V6 and $107,990 for the V6 S.
